The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare

Title: The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones; City of Ashes; City of Glass
Author: Cassandra Clare
Genre: YA, Sci-Fi/Dystopia, Fantasy, Romance
Publish Date: October 19, 2010

Summary:
In City of Bones, the handsome Jace introduces fifteen-year-old Clary Fray to the world of the Shadowhunters, a secret cadre of warriors dedicated to driving demons out of our world. She’s sure that Valentine, the evil and powerful Shadowhunter, is responsible for her mother’s disappearance, but she’s about to discover much more….

In the second book, City of Ashes, Clary’s mother remains in a mysterious coma, and danger abounds now that the Shadowhunter world knows Valentine is still alive—and that Clary and Jace are his children. Will Valentine succeed in making the Mortal Instruments his forever?

In book three, City of Glass, Clary has to use all her ingenuity and newfound magical skills to get herself to the secretive Shadowhunters’ home country in an attempt to cure her mother’s enchanted sleeping sickness. When Valentine attacks the city and destroys the demon towers, the past tangles inextricably with the present as Clary and Jace face down their father.

Review: I enjoyed reading this series up to book 3 (city of glass). Clary finds herself jumping feet first into the world of supernatural (vampires, werewolves, nephlem, fairies and the shadowhunters). Clary meets Jace as he's rescuing her from a demon attack and takes a chance by tracing a rune on her body. Later in the story you find out this could kill an ordinary human but he still takes the chance with her. Luck paid off and she survived. Through this adventure Clary falls head over heals for Jace and works w/ him and his family/crew to take down Valentine, a former Shadowhunter turned evil. Clary is positive Valentine is her father and plans on finding him (in hopes of destroying him) as he kidnapped her mother. The two love birds find out they are more than fancy for each other in this novel, which honestly made me ill. After much fighting, Clary discovering her magical skills and creating new runes (as well as mastering old ones) her and Jace save the day. They also find out another secret about themselves that allows you to take a sigh of relief. I really enjoyed reading this series and recommend it; however, with that being said, I was not happy w/ Clockwork Angel or City of Fallen Angels. The author backdates the story line in Clockwork Angel (and goes no where). City of Fallen Angels is completely boring and do not recommend it. However, this review is only for this series. If you read only these three you will not miss out on anything in the other books.
Constantin Film Produktion bought the rights to this story and plan on making it into a movie in 2012. Lily Collins (The Blind Side, Priest ) will play the role of Clary, Jaime Campbell Brown (The Twilight Saga: New Moon, Eclipse, Breaking Dawn) will play the role of Jace and Carter Jenkins (Aliens in the attack, Valentines Day) will play the role of Simon.
