That Boy by Jillian Dodd

Name: That Boy
Author: Jillian Dodd
Genre: YA/Romance/Coming of Age
Publisher: Jillian Dodd
Release Date: May 2011

Summary: You know, being friends with two cute boys does have its benefits.

There’s Danny. Danny is a golden boy in every way. He has dreamy blue eyes and blonde hair that always looks perfect, even when it’s windblown or been stuck under a football helmet. He’s the boy every girl crushes on. The boy I get into trouble with, the boy I fight with, the hot quarterback no girl can resist, not even me. Being with Danny is like being on an adventure. He has a bright, contagious smile and abs to die for. He’s pretty much irresistible.

Equally crush worthy is Phillip. Adorable, sweet Phillip, who I have known since birth. Phillip has dark hair, a perfect smile, brown eyes, and the sexiest voice I have ever heard. He’s the boy I talk to every night before I go to sleep. The boy who rescues me, the boy who can read my mind, the boy who is always there for me, the boy who tries to keep me out of trouble, the boy who irritatingly keeps getting hotter, and whose strong arms always seem to find their way around me. And when he gives me that grin, I can never say no.

One boy will give me my very first kiss.
One boy will teach me to make out.
One boy will take me to prom.
And finally, one boy will ask me to marry him.
They will both be my best friends.
But only one of them will be the boy I fall in love with.
Only one of them is That Boy.

Review:
This book made me laugh OUT LOUD and it also made me cry. How often do you find yourself doing that in a GREAT book? I was not expecting this at all.
Starting out as children in this book you gain the idea Jayden (or JJ) is the girl next door and her neighbor is Phillip, a guy any girl would be nuts to not crush over. Then moves in her enemy, Danny. Danny thinks Phillip shouldn’t be friends, let alone BEST friends, with a girl and makes this point… a lot… until she punches Danny in the nose! He realizes he’s completely wrong about her and lets her in and together, all three play football. (I’m not sure where Ms Dodd came up with the idea of strip football but it is genius and wish I would have thought of it myself!)
Back to the review…
These kids grow up together from elementary into college (Huskers). They all look out for one another and it all is realistic. You don’t get the gushy gooy stuff (which I hate). The author kept the characters realistic and makes you want to relate to them. I find myself comparing my childhood to what I have read in “that boy” and how many similar situations I encountered.
I thought this would a fun book to read, a little outside what I would normally pick up… and that it was! I was pleasantly surprised and felt like I completely connected to the character, JJ. You are that girl and you want to be that girl. It is written in first person (the action is told from her point of view). You find yourself crushing on both boys. This would be a great weekend read and an even better summer or winter break read. I say go get it today and enjoy the story!

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

Title: The Night Circus
Author: Erin Morgenstern
Publisher: Doubleday
Genre: Adult Fiction, Romance, Historical, Supernatural
Available: September 13, 2011

Summary:
The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. Within the black-and-white striped canvas tents is an utterly unique experience full of breathtaking amazements. It is called Le Cirque des Rêves, and it is only open at night.

But behind the scenes, a fierce competition is underway—a duel between two young magicians, Celia and Marco, who have been trained since childhood expressly for this purpose by their mercurial instructors. Unbeknownst to them, this is a game in which only one can be left standing, and the circus is but the stage for a remarkable battle of imagination and will. Despite themselves, however, Celia and Marco tumble headfirst into love—a deep, magical love that makes the lights flicker and the room grow warm whenever they so much as brush hands.

True love or not, the game must play out, and the fates of everyone involved, from the cast of extraordinary circus performers to the patrons, hang in the balance, suspended as precariously as the daring acrobats overhead.

Written in rich, seductive prose, this spell-casting novel is a feast for the senses and the heart.

Review:
I have no idea where to begin. This book completely captivated me and drew me in. I love the writing style of Erin Morgenstern and felt like I was there in the circus watching the performances, witnessing the challenge, crying with Celia, learning with Marco...

Imagine walking into Cirque de Soleil in 1890. Imagine everything playing out in black and white (like a silent movie) with splashes of red. Now imagine magic is real and anything is possible!

Celia and Marco have a destiny to play out a cruel challenge. They do not know of each other and have been training for this challenge their entire lives. Neither Celia or Marco know or understand what this challenge is, how it will play out, who it will all effect and how it may draw in.

When Marco sees Celia across the room he knows instantly, without a doubt, she is his challenger, but he is instantly attracted to her. She sees Marco in his bowler hat watching her, always staying in the dark corners not posing as a threat but she knows there's more to him, but what?

When they brush against each other, fierce winds pick up and mysterious things begin to happen. Can they fulfill their destiny in this challenge and keep their feelings for each other at bay or will they give into their desires and let everything fall, including the circus?

You MUST read this book when it comes out! Here is a link to to pre-order it today! I cannot tell you enough how wonderful this book was and how excited I am, personally, to see it come to life on film. Summit entertainment (who brought you Twilight) will be producing this film. It has been set for a release date of 2013. The audio book of The Night Circus will be read by Jim Dale, who read the "Harry Potter" series.

Boy vs Girl by Na'ima B. Robert

Title: Boy vs Girl
Author: Nai'ima B. Robert
Genre: Coming of age/Family/Drama
Publication Date: March 2011 (OUT NOW)

Description:
Farhana swallowed and reached for the hijab. But then she saw with absolute clarity the weird looks from the other girls at school, and the smirks from the guys. Did she dare? And then there was Malik... What should she do about him? Faraz was thinking about Skrooz and the lads. Soon he would finally have the respect of the other kids at school. But at what price? He heard Skrooz's voice, sharp as a switchblade: "This thing is powerful, blud. But you have to earn it, see? Just a few more errands for me..." They're twins, born 6 minutes apart. Both are in turmooil and both have life-changing choices to make, against the peaceful backdrop of Ramadan. Do Farhana and Faraz have enough courage to do the right thing? And can they help each other - or will one of them draw the other towards catastrophe? This powerful novel explores the idea of honour and what it means to different generations of Muslim families.

Review:
This book was something I normally would have not picked up but I'm glad I was able to read it. I was moved by the Muslim customs in this book and it allows you to put yourself in their position, regardless of your religious upbringing.
What struck me is the Muslim culture suffers from so much racism; even bringing their children up in different countries they are still expected to follow the Pakistani way, even if the opposite sex is Muslim and white, black, brown or whatever. They are not and will not be a part of their families. I felt myself shuttering when the families absolutely refused to hear anything otherwise.
The story of the book covers from a male and female perspective; twin boy (Faraz) and girl (Farhana). He wants to be accepted at school but at what cost? He has fallen into the 'gang' crowd. As much as he wants out, especially with Ramadan in full swing, he does not have the courage to stand up for himself and say no. He finds himself beating up guys with bats and selling drugs.
His sister is struggling with her identity as a Muslim. She wants to wear the hijab (headscarf) but her mother refuses to hear of it. If she defies her and wears it what will happen with her social status at school? She's been told she is supermodel beautiful but wearing the hijab will force the eyes of boys (and girls) to look the other way. Is this really what she wants?
As they are struggling to come into their own a horrible accident happens and threatens to take the life of one of the twins. Will the family pull together to overcome this or will they fall completely apart?
No matter what your religious background I highly recommend reading this book, especially to the YA crowd. Gangs, drugs, peer pressure is everywhere...

Review: Are you a fan of the greek gods? Maybe Zeus or Poseidon? Well here's your chance to indulge without the childlike qualities Percy Jackson! I completely enjoyed this story and it sucked me in. Helen is the typical high school girl just trying to blend into her crowd. The problem with her blending is she's stunning; 5'9" tall, long blond hair and a complete knock-out. The other girls hate her obviously, except for Claire, her BFF she nick named Giggles.

She jokes with Helen, "there's one for each of us!" What Helen doesn't realize is this family moving into Nantucket will completely change her life forever. Helen does not realize what is in store for her. She knows she has super strong abilities but has hid them from everyone, even herself. Personal Demons by Lisa Desrochers

Title: Personal Demons
Author: Lisa Desrochers
Genre:  Fantasy, YA
Published: September 14, 2010

Summary: Frannie Cavanaugh is a good Catholic girl with a bit of a wicked streak. She has spent years keeping everyone at a distance—-even her closest friends—-and it seems as if her senior year is going to be more of the same . . . until Luc Cain enrolls in her class. No one knows where he came from, but Frannie can't seem to stay away from him.
What she doesn't know is that Luc is on a mission. He's been sent from Hell itself to claim Frannie's soul. It should be easy—-all he has to do is get her to sin, and Luc is as tempting as they come. Frannie doesn't stand a chance. But he has to work fast, because if the infernals are after her, the celestials can't be far behind. And sure enough, it's not long before the angel Gabriel shows up, willing to do anything to keep Luc from getting what he came for. It isn't long before they find themselves fighting for more than just Frannie's soul.
But if Luc fails, there will be Hell to pay . . . for all of them.

Review: What a roller coaster ride! Every girl out there has a bit of Frannie in her. I used to love the bad boy type and does Luc ever sound juicy! Then here comes Gabe... the angel who'd make any girl excited in a different way. Between the two of them Frannie finds herself torn between wanting what's safe vs wanting love and lust.
Ms Desrochers writes this in first person, switching the roles between Frannie and Luc's perspective (respectively). Frannie's friends also find the guys attractive and Frannie, for the first time ever, fights for the guy rather than letting her BFF have the the 'dangerous' one. Taylor tells her, "PICK ONE!" LOL!
If you had to decide between heaven & hell, who would you pick? The hot dangerous guy that makes you feel so much lust? Or the safe one knowing you feel the right kind of love, safety & security?
This is a great summer break read and makes you remember being in love-lust. I appreciated the book and the underlying message in it.
Luc!

Gabe!

Sleight: Book One of the AVRA-K by Jennifer Sommersby

Title:  Sleight: Book One of the AVRA-K
Author: Jennifer Sommersby
Genre: YA - Suspense/Mystery/Romance

Summary:
Her mom is dead.
Ghosts follow her around.
Her best friend is an elephant.
And she’s about to meet the biggest game changer of all: a boy. With a secret.

When circus-dwelling Gemma Flannery learns she will be attending public school for the first time in her seventeen years, little does she know that fitting in with her 12th-grade classmates will be the least of her concerns. A pro at hiding her knack for seeing the dead (“shades”), Gemma is grieving the recent suicide of her mentally ill mother, a process eased by the introduction of her first real love interest, the charming and painfully handsome Henry Dmitri, who is harboring his own collection of dangerous secrets. Together, they will be presented with a frightening challenge: to assume their roles as heirs to a 3000-year-old magical text, the AVRAKEDAVRA, a book the über-rich, sleight-of-being master Lucian Dmitri would do anything to get his hands on. As each terrifying layer in her new reality melts away, Gemma unearths truths that her quiet, nomadic life with the Cinzio Traveling Players is not at all what she’d always cherished. Gemma and Henry must rely on each other to stop Lucian’s diabolical plotting that will bring the world to its tired, scab-riddled knees, and are sent on the flight of their young lives, to save themselves, their families, and the world from the darkest kind of destruction.
Let the chase begin.

Review:
This book was recommended to me a few days ago and I have to say what a WHIRL-WIND adventure! Move over Edward Cullen! Here comes Henry Dmitri!!
On with the review... The characters are from a family circus (not like Water for Elephants) and they are being put into public school for the first time in their lives. What could be strange about that? How about Gemma seeing dead people? Maybe hearding other peoples thoughts?
Gemma meets Henry in school as he's assigned as her buddy. Henry is described as a drop-dead gorgeous hunk piece of meat... um I mean guy :) and they instantly take to each other.
Gemma's circus brother, Ash, sparks some jealousy at their new found friendship and is not the least bit concerned in sharing this with her. Juni, Ash's twin sister, is the 'cheerleader' of the group and loves everyone. She has my vote as prom queen.
Henry's father, Lucian, shows up and man is he evil! He sets out on a tyrant to get this book back from Gemma and Henry. What happens if they succeed or fail? Take a chance and read this fantastic story!!
While reading this book I kept thinking back to Harry Potter. Avakedavara meaning the words of death in HP series is completely different in this book. Lucian Dmitri reminds me of a mix between Voldemort and Lucian Malfoy. That is where the similarities end. Sleight can definitely stand out on its own against the HP series. This book flows well and kept my attention the entire length through. Recommended for a great read during the summer break!

The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare

Title: The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones; City of Ashes; City of Glass
Author: Cassandra Clare
Genre: YA, Sci-Fi/Dystopia, Fantasy, Romance
Publish Date: October 19, 2010

Summary:
In City of Bones, the handsome Jace introduces fifteen-year-old Clary Fray to the world of the Shadowhunters, a secret cadre of warriors dedicated to driving demons out of our world. She’s sure that Valentine, the evil and powerful Shadowhunter, is responsible for her mother’s disappearance, but she’s about to discover much more….

In the second book, City of Ashes, Clary’s mother remains in a mysterious coma, and danger abounds now that the Shadowhunter world knows Valentine is still alive—and that Clary and Jace are his children. Will Valentine succeed in making the Mortal Instruments his forever?

In book three, City of Glass, Clary has to use all her ingenuity and newfound magical skills to get herself to the secretive Shadowhunters’ home country in an attempt to cure her mother’s enchanted sleeping sickness. When Valentine attacks the city and destroys the demon towers, the past tangles inextricably with the present as Clary and Jace face down their father.

Review: I enjoyed reading this series up to book 3 (city of glass). Clary finds herself jumping feet first into the world of supernatural (vampires, werewolves, nephlem, fairies and the shadowhunters). Clary meets Jace as he's rescuing her from a demon attack and takes a chance by tracing a rune on her body. Later in the story you find out this could kill an ordinary human but he still takes the chance with her. Luck paid off and she survived. Through this adventure Clary falls head over heals for Jace and works w/ him and his family/crew to take down Valentine, a former Shadowhunter turned evil. Clary is positive Valentine is her father and plans on finding him (in hopes of destroying him) as he kidnapped her mother. The two love birds find out they are more than fancy for each other in this novel, which honestly made me ill. After much fighting, Clary discovering her magical skills and creating new runes (as well as mastering old ones) her and Jace save the day. They also find out another secret about themselves that allows you to take a sigh of relief. I really enjoyed reading this series and recommend it; however, with that being said, I was not happy w/ Clockwork Angel or City of Fallen Angels. The author backdates the story line in Clockwork Angel (and goes no where). City of Fallen Angels is completely boring and do not recommend it. However, this review is only for this series. If you read only these three you will not miss out on anything in the other books.
Constantin Film Produktion bought the rights to this story and plan on making it into a movie in 2012. Lily Collins (The Blind Side, Priest ) will play the role of Clary, Jaime Campbell Brown (The Twilight Saga: New Moon, Eclipse, Breaking Dawn) will play the role of Jace and Carter Jenkins (Aliens in the attack, Valentines Day) will play the role of Simon.

As if starting high school isn't hard enough. . .now Nick has to hide his new friends from his mom, his chainsaw from the principal, and keep the zombies and the demon Simi from eating his brains, all without getting grounded or suspended. How in the world is he supposed to do that?

Review: This book is hard to review as it tended to really jump around. Nick is suddenly by a strange man who's only request for pay back is to help him out, sort of an apprentice. Nick agrees... Background on Nick: his mother is a stripper and grew up in the 'clubs' and is known as a 'cute kid'. Not sure where the father might be... When Nick is rescued by the mysterious Kyrian Hunter, a wealthy man connected to a strange undercurrent of vampires and zombies in New Orleans, opens his world up to vampires, werewolves and zombies. He meets a beautiful girl who is the 'v-hunter' and he starts following her around watching her do her craft (staking). His BFF is a video game junkie and unknowingly starts the zombie attack. After a whirl-wind adventure of staking, running and killing zombies the story finally ends. It was a fun read but could not take it seriously.

Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins

Title: Catching Fire (sequel to The Hunger Games)
Author: Suzanne Collins
Genre: YA, Sci-Fi/Dystopia, Fantasy, Romance
Publish Date: September 1, 2009

Summary: After winning the 74th Hunger Games in the previous novel, Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark return home to District 12, the poorest sector in the fictional country of Panem. On the day that Katniss and Peeta are to start a "victory tour" of the country, she is visited by President Snow. President Snow explains that he is angry at her for threatening to commit suicide with Peeta at the end of the Hunger Games, which permitted them both to win. President Snow tells Katniss that when she defied the Capitol, she created talk of rebellion in the districts. He threatens to kill her family and friends if she cannot prove to everyone in Panem that her act was not one of defiance, but that she was instead driven by an intense love for Peeta.
The first stop on the victory tour is District 11, the home of Katniss' friend and ally in the Hunger Games, Rue, before she died. During the ceremony, Katniss delivers a quick speech to the people of District 11, thanking them for their tributes. When she is done, an old man whistles a tune that Rue used in the arena to tell Katniss that she was safe. The song acts as a signal, and everyone salutes Katniss using the same gesture that she used to say farewell to Rue. Katniss is taken away, but not before she sees Peacekeepers shoot the whistling man in the head. Katniss and Peeta then proceed to travel to all of the twelve districts and the Capitol. During an interview, Peeta proposes to Katniss publicly, hoping to settle the dispute between Katniss and President Snow. Despite this, Katniss learns that their attempts of subduing rebellion in the districts have failed. Shortly after returning to District 12, Katniss encounters two runaways from District 8. They explain a theory that District 13 was not destroyed by the Capitol due to District 13 possessing a nuclear arsenal, and that stock footage of 13 is played instead of new film on television. Later, it is announced that for the 75th Hunger Games, 24 victors from previous years will be forced to compete once again. This is in honor of the Quarter Quell, an event that occurs every 25th year of the Games, and allows the Capitol to introduce a twist. Knowing that she and Peeta will both be competing in the Games a second time, Katniss decides that she will devote herself to protecting Peeta.

Review: As with any first edition, the sequels usually are not as good as the first. This is NOT the case! Suzanne Collins sequel, Catching Fire, as just as good as the first, if better! The Quarter Quell has come around and a boy and girl from each district is selected to participate. Being the only female tribute winner, Katniss knows she has to go back in, not even a year later from The Hunger Games. Haymitch is selected as the male, but Peeta stands in his place. Haymitch again takes on the role of mentor. The teams are dumped into another arena, this time surrounded by water. They must swim towards the cornucopia to start. Some turn on one another, others start an alliance. Finnick, Mags, Joanna, Katniss and Peeta all team up. Wiress and Beetee join in as well. As they are fighting together to stay alive they are learning things about this arena that are different from the prior. Katniss recalls a conversation she has with the head game maker and realizes he gave away a hint to how the arena will work; in a clockwise pattern. From tidal waves to killer fog to mockingjays that drive you insane, the group is in for another thrill ride of survival. As they are teamed up Katniss' sole mission is to save Peeta, rather than herself. Does she succeed? Does she save him and herself again? What happens to the other tributes she's teamed up with? As an up and down thrill ride you'll find yourself visualizing the arena and being part of it with Katniss. The end will shock you!

Interview with Suzanne Collins about the hunger games trilogy:

Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

Title: Hunger Games
Author: Suzanne Collins
Genre: YA, Sci-Fi/Dystopia, Fantasy, Romance
Publish Date: September 14, 2008

Summary: The Hunger Games takes place in an unidentified future time period after the destruction of North America, in a nation known as Panem. Panem consists of a wealthy Capitol and twelve surrounding, poorer districts. District 12, where the book begins, is located in the coal-rich region that was formerly Appalachia.[7]
As punishment for a previous rebellion against the Capitol, every year one boy and one girl between the ages of 12 and 18 from each district are selected at random and forced to participate in the Hunger Games, a televised event in which the participants, or "tributes", must fight to the death in a dangerous outdoor arena until only one remains. The story follows fatherless 16-year-old Katniss Everdeen, a girl from District 12 who volunteers for the 74th Games in place of her younger sister, Primrose. Also participating from District 12 is Peeta Mellark, a boy whom Katniss knows from school and who once gave her bread when her family was starving.
Katniss and Peeta are taken to the Capitol, where they meet the other tributes and are publicly displayed to the Capitol audience. During this time, Peeta reveals on-air his long-time unrequited love for Katniss. Katniss believes this to be a ploy to gain audience support for the Games, which can be crucial for survival, as audience members are permitted to send gifts to favored tributes during the Games. The Games begin with eleven of the 24 tributes dying in the first day, while Katniss relies on her well-practiced hunting and outdoor skills to survive. As the games continue, the tribute death toll increases, but both Katniss and Peeta are able to evade death.
Supposedly due to Katniss and Peeta's beloved image in the minds of the audience as "star-crossed lovers", a rule change is announced midway through the games, stating that two tributes from the same district can win the Hunger Games as a pair. Upon hearing this, Katniss searches for Peeta and finds him wounded. She nurses him back to health and acts the part of a young girl falling in love to gain more favor with the audience and, consequently, gifts from her sponsors. When the couple are finally the last two tributes, the Gamemakers suddenly reverse the rule change and try to force them into a dramatic finale where one must kill the other to win.

Review: Suzanne Collins novel, The Hunger Games, is a fantastic read and grips you from the beginning. I did not want to put this down for a second! When Katniss takes the place of her younger sister, Prim (who is 12 to Katniss 16) she and Peeta take place in the annual Hunger Games. The republic of Panem (formally the United States of America) has 12 districts (once 13 but in the uprising district 13 was destroyed, thus forming The Hunger Games). Everyone in Panem is required to watch The Hunger Games on television as it plays out, reminding everyone once again that the Capital is in charge.
Peeta and Katniss start their training with their successor, Haymitch (who won the Hunger Games many years ago and has since become a drunk). Haymitch plots the "star crossed lovers" theme to the duo and wants them to play the part. To Katniss this is a no brainer but for Peeta, he's taking it seriously and is seriously in love with her. Katniss thinks it's an act... right? We'll see as the story plays out.
One by one the tributes die or are murdered. One in particular dies and I actually cried (Rue). Katniss provided her a solid burial and made sure the capital saw it take place. Again, I cried.
Between mutations, tracker jackers and the mockingjays the story is VERY well written and stays with you days/weeks/months after reading it.
Lionsgate has picked up the rights to this and will become a movie releasing on March 23, 2012. You can guarantee I'll be there for the midnight viewing!!

This is not a trailer for the movie but fan made and very well done. Please enjoy! The scene that takes place is right after Katniss destroyed the cornucopia and went searching for Rue.

Another fanmade trailer featuring the actual tributes (well done!):

Incarceron by Catherine Fisher

Title: Incarceron
Author: Catherine Fisher
Genre: YA, Sci-Fi/Dystopia, Fantasy, Romance, Suspense
Publish Date: February 8, 2011

Summary: Finn is a 17-year old prisoner of Incarceron. His memories begin and end there. He knows nothing about his heritage except for vague memories that tease at his mind. The teen is determined to escape the prison fashioned centuries ago as a solution to the chaos created by man. Now Incarceron is self-sustaining and self-perpetuating—prisoners are born there and they die there. Legend claims only one man has ever escaped, Sapphique, and Finn is determined to follow in his steps. Claudia, the warden's daughter, lives sequestered in a castle surrounded by servants. But she, too, longs for escape—from a father who frightens her and from betrothal to an insipid prince. Finn and Claudia each discover a crystal key and are amazed to find that they can communicate with each other. As their trust in one another builds, each pledges to help the other. The two stories emerge, intertwine and, by the end, unwind in startling twists that will astonish listeners.

Review: The prison has a mind of its own and changes to adapt to its own environment. Finn, a prisoner of Incarceron, has barely vague images in his mind he believes are his but not quite sure. Understand in Incarceron most inmates are born there, not "placed" there. Some born of the prison take on bits and pieces of other (dead) prisoners and pieces not taken on are replaced with metal (gross right?). Finn firmly believes he was not born of the prison. Finn finds a key with the help of a debutante. With this key he is able to communicate outside of Incarceron and his hopes spring to life with hope of escaping.
The wardons daughter, Claudia, also finds a key, the wardons key. She too is hoping to escape her own hell of marrying the queen's son, who is not the rightful heir to the thrown. The rightful heir died many years ago, mysteriously... or did he?
For a challenging read, pick up Incarceron and give it a shot. It can be difficult at times to follow but it comes together in the end. Picked up by Fox, this is slated to become a movie in 2013 staring Taylor Lautner (Jacob Black from The Twilight Saga).

Maximum Ride Series by James Patterson

Title: Maximum Ride (series)
Author: James Patterson
Genre: YA, Sci-Fi, Fantasy
Publish Date: April 1, 2007 (The Angel Experiment) through February 14, 2011 (Angel)

Summary (from Wikipedia):
The first book, The Angel Experiment, focuses around the rescue of Angel, the youngest member of the Flock. The group is safe in the mountains until a pack of Erasers (human-lupine hybrids) appear and kidnap Angel. The Flock must return to the School, where they had once been held and experimented on, to rescue Angel. Max is deeply confused when she finds that Jeb Batchelder, who had rescued them from the School and cared for them before disappearing two years ago, has reappeared as an evil figure, and that his son Ari has become an Eraser. As Max focuses on looking after the Flock and saving Angel, she is puzzled by a Voice in her head saying that her mission is to save the world. The Flock flees to New York City after rescuing Angel from the School. In New York they start trying to find out who there parents are. There, a dog named Total is added to their group.

School's Out – Forever begins with the Flock heading off to look for their parents using papers they found at the Institute for Higher Living. On the way, they run into flying Erasers (with patched-on wings), including Ari. After a fight with Ari, Fang suffers injuries bad enough to need treatment at a hospital. FBI agent Anne Walker offers her home for residence while Fang recovers. The Flock agrees, and eventually they are enrolled into a real school. While at the school, Max goes out with a boy named Sam, but gets jealous when she spots Fang kissing a girl named Lissa. The principal of the school works for the Institute and almost traps the Flock at the school. Anne reveals herself as a member of the lab that created the Flock, and seeks to recapture them. Later, Max is kidnapped and replaced with a clone that has her appearance but acts differently. In the end, a fight leaves only the real Max standing. It is also revealed that Total can talk.

In Saving the World and Other Extreme Sports, the Flock must save the world from the Itex Corporation (the company behind the School) and its evil Director, who want to terminate all recombinant species and cut the Earth's population in half. The Erasers have been replaced with the flying, robotic Flyboys. As this is happening, Fang tries to persuade Max to find a permanent home where they can live in peace. Max invites Ari (the last remaining Eraser and Max's brother) to join the group after escaping from the School again, causing Fang, Iggy, and the Gasman to leave the Flock in protest. In the end, Ari dies, the group reunites, and Max discovers that her parents are Jeb Batchelder and Dr. Valencia Martinez, a kindly veterinary surgeon from the first book. She also begins to realize she has feelings for Fang.

In the fourth book, The Final Warning, the Flock flies out of a government meeting set up to decide what is best for them. Later, they go with Max's parents to Antarctica, where a team of scientists needs their assistance. There they fight an international organization led by the Uber Director, who intends to auction off the Flock to corrupt leaders of foreign countries to be used as weapons and mercenaries. When Angel goes after a baby penguin in the midst of a blizzard, the group is captured and taken to Miami. They defeat the Uber Director in the midst of a hurricane and make their escape. Meanwhile, Total grows wings of his own and falls in love with Akila, an Alaskan Malamute. Max and Fang kiss a few times, and Max starts to acknowledge her feelings for him.

At the start of MAX: A Maximum Ride Novel, the Flock is attacked by bionic assassins (which Max nicknames M-Geeks) at environmental awareness shows in Los Angeles and Mexico City. Later, the government enlists their help in finding out what is destroying hundreds of ships and killing millions of fish off the coast of Hawaii. While the Flock is undertaking the task, a criminal mastermind is tracking their every move. Then, Dr. Martinez (Max's mother) is kidnapped and held hostage. The Flock takes a submarine down to the ocean depths, fends off hordes of M-Geeks and rescues Dr. Martinez from an underwater dome as it starts to flood. During their struggles, Fang and Max's relationship grows stronger, and Max feels that she loves Fang.

In Fang: A Maximum Ride Novel, the Flock travel to Africa to help the people there. They meet Dr. Hans, a former Itex worker, and Dylan, another avian hybrid designed to be Max's "perfect other half". After a prophetic statement from Angel stating that Fang will die soon, Max is traumatized and starts spending more time with him. Dylan joins the Flock, and they return to their newly rebuilt home in the mountains. Max and Fang are told to leave the Flock because they are more focused on their personal relationship than the surrounding dangers. Angel becomes the new leader of the Flock and gets rid of the rules Max set up for them. Eventually the group reunites, but Fang is captured by Dr. Hans and dies while being experimented on. The Flock rushes to save Fang, and Max stabs his heart with an adrenaline shot and revives him. Dylan also injects himself in a suicide attempt, but fails. In the epilogue, Total and Akila are married, and Fang leaves Max a note saying that the Flock is in danger with him there, and that he will meet Max again in 20 years.

In Angel: A Maximum Ride Novel, Max hasn't gotten over the fact that Fang has left her, but is slowly starting to warm up to Dylan despite her mixed feelings in the sixth book. Meanwhile Fang starts his own gang which includes Max II (Max's clone), now called Maya. The two teams join forces in Paris to stop a wild organization known as the Doomsday Group from killing themselves in order to save the planet.

Review:
While the beginning of this series started out STRONG, the rest of it started to dwindle. The flock is set to save the world from a coming apocalypse, run from Erasers and learn to work/fight together and fly. By the 3rd or 4th book the apocalypse brings you up short: it's to save the world from POLLUTION.... Seriously? What happened to the end of the world? Really? If you are a James Patterson fan (i.e.: I, Alex Cross, Kiss the Girls, etc...) you may be disappointed with this series. I read all the books and as I said, they started out REALLY strong with great potential until the bomb shell of saving the world from pollution. We all do our part in recycling but really... seriously? Mr. Patterson needs to go back and rethink the logic on this one.
Maximum Ride has been picked up to be made into a movie, which I would pay to see as the first few books are great. It is slated for 2013 (originally for 2011 but said direction, Catherine Hardwicke sent it back to the screen writer for more input and some changes). Catherine Hardwicke directed Twilight and Red Riding Hood.

Interview with James Patterson on "Schools out forever"

Matched by Ally Condie

Title: Matched
Author: Ally Condie
Genre: YA, Sci-Fi/Dystopia, Fantasy, Romance
Publish Date: November 30, 2010

Summary: For Cassia, nothing is left to chance--not what she will eat, the job she will have, or the man she will marry. In Matched, the Society Officials have determined optimal outcomes for all aspects of daily life, thereby removing the "burden" of choice. When Cassia's best friend is identified as her ideal marriage Match it confirms her belief that Society knows best, until she plugs in her Match microchip and a different boy’s face flashes on the screen. This improbable mistake sets Cassia on a dangerous path to the unthinkable--rebelling against the predetermined life Society has in store for her. As author Ally Condie’s unique dystopian Society takes chilling measures to maintain the status quo, Matched reminds readers that freedom of choice is precious, and not without sacrifice.

Review: I was not too thrilled with this one. It was a slow read and the lead female character, Cassia, seems a bit whiny. She's matched to her life long friend and also finds out she's matched so an outcast. Who does she chose and why? The government picks her match, her work and when she will die.
For a YA book this was an ok read for the tweens and teens, however, I was left wanting more... If I were to give it a star rating, I'd give it 3 out of 5.

Wither by Lauren DeStefano

Title: Wither
Author: Lauren DeStefano
Genre: YA, Sci-Fi/Dystopia, Fantasy, Romance
Publish Date: March 22, 2011

Summary (from Cassandra Claire, author of Mortal Instruments series):
Lauren DeStefano’s new book, Wither, heralds the coming of a promising new voice in young adult dystopian fiction. Wither introduces us to Rhine Ellery, age sixteen, who lives in a world decimated by the results of genetic engineering. In an attempt to render humanity almost immortal and disease-free, scientists accidentally introduced into human DNA a ticking time bomb — all women live only to age twenty and men to age twenty-five. In this world, riddled with brutality and stricken with poverty, girls are married off as young as thirteen and forced to bear children in a desperate attempt to keep humanity ahead of the wave of disease that threatens to eradicate them.

Lately readers have been seeing an influx of books handling new and old topics in a different, more female-centric way. Part parable, part warning, Wither puts women and girls at the heart of a dystopian tale mixing progress and disempowerment, science and secrecy. After being kidnapped from the home she shares with her twin brother, Rhine is "sold" to a rich man, Linden, along with two other girls, Cecily and Jenna. Their polygamous marriage is seen as necessary, for Linden’s father is a scientist trying to find a cure for the "virus" that strikes down youth, and he needs new subjects for his experiments — subjects in whose DNA, he hopes, a cure can be found.

The day-to-day lives of Rhine and her sister-wives — parties, pregnancy, babies — contrasts starkly with the shadow of death that looms over every action. Even Rhine’s growing romance with a servant, Gabriel, could lead to vicious punishment for them both — as could her repeated attempts to escape her gilded prison. This story, the first of a trilogy, leaves us with a glimmer of hope but no easy answers.

Review: Rhine and her brother live alone and have learned to listen for any sounds of attack. Girls are kidnapped to be sold into slavery, prostitution or marriage. If these do not pan out, they are killed. The "first generations" find a way to make a cure all. This cure all produces the perfect specimen. With all good things bad will subject. The girls die at age 20 where boys die at age 25. As people search for a cure girls are producing babies hoping their offspring will live beyond the 20/25 age barrier. Rhine is married into a family with her "sister wives". She immediately hates her new husband but forms a bond with his first wife and her sister wives. One of the house hands, Gabriel, befriends her as well and she starts to develop feelings for him. Will Rhine stay at the mansion she's been married into in hopes for a cure or will she dare to escape? Find out by reading Wither! Highly recommended!

Hourglass by Myra McEntire

Title: Hourglass
Author: Myra McEntire
Genre: YA, Sci-Fi/Dystopia, Fantasy, Romance
Publish Date: June 14, 2011

Summary: For seventeen-year-old Emerson Cole, life is about seeing what isn't there: swooning Southern Belles; soldiers long forgotten; a haunting jazz trio that vanishes in an instant. Plagued by phantoms since her parents' death, she just wants the apparitions to stop so she can be normal. She's tried everything, but the visions keep coming back.So when her well-meaning brother brings in a consultant from a secretive organization called the Hourglass, Emerson's willing to try one last cure. But meeting Michael Weaver may not only change her future, it may change her past.

Who is this dark, mysterious, sympathetic guy, barely older than Emerson herself, who seems to believe every crazy word she says? Why does an electric charge seem to run through the room whenever he's around? And why is he so insistent that he needs her help to prevent a death that never should have happened?

Full of atmosphere, mystery, and romance, Hourglass merges the very best of the paranormal and science-fiction genres in a seductive, remarkable young adult debut.

Review: Thank you Myra for writing a sci-fi novel not involving vampires & werewolves! Hourglass will take you away on a ride like no other! Emerson Cole has not had it easy. Just before her parents died in an accident she started seeing ghosts. They look like every day people to her and sometimes are hard to tell if they are real, except for their clothes. Seeing a southern belle is not likely to happen in our current day. After countless tries with psychiatrists and being drugged into an almost coma (shock therapy anyone?) Em's brother, Thomas, has one last request: Speak with Michael from Hourglass and see if he can help you out. On her whirlwind ride Em sets out on a super adventure where she discovers more about herself than she ever thought possible. This book is recommended highly!

Siren by Tricia Rayburn

Title: Siren
Author: Tricia Rayburn
Genre: YA, Sci-Fi/Dystopia, Fantasy, Romance
Publish Date: May 10, 2011

Summary: Seventeen-year-old Vanessa Sands is afraid of everything—the dark, heights, the ocean—but her fearless older sister, Justine, has always been there to coach her through every challenge. That is, until Justine goes cliff-diving one night near the family’s vacation house in Maine, and her lifeless body washes up on shore the next day.
Though her parents hope that they’ll be able to find closure back in Boston, Vanessa can’t help feeling that her sister’s death wasn’t an accident. After discovering that Justine was keeping a lot of secrets, Vanessa returns to Winter Harbor, hoping that Justine’s boyfriend might know more. But Caleb has been missing since Justine’s death.
Soon, it’s not just Vanessa who’s afraid. All of Winter Harbor is abuzz with anxiety when another body washes ashore, and panic sets in when the small town becomes host to a string of fatal, water-related accidents in which all the victims are found, horrifically, grinning from ear to ear.
Vanessa turns to Caleb’s brother, Simon, for help, and begins to find herself drawn to him. As the pair try to understand the sudden rash of creepy drownings, Vanessa uncovers a secret that threatens her new romance—and will change her life forever.

Review: Vanessa comes across as a weak character and her building takes place throughout the novel. Vanessa's sister, Justine, jumps off a cliff and dies one evening during a horrific storm off the coast of Maine. Unlike her personality, Vanessa knows this is not the Justine she grew up with. Dartmouth bound and super popular Vanessa feels something went wrong and she plans on investigating why. During her time in Maine, Vanessa meets a family at Betty's Chowder House, a local must-eat spot in the small town. She notices migraine type head aches every time she's around one of the family members but can't figure out why. Justine's boyfriend, Caleb, turns up missing and she feels this family could have some answers. Caleb's brother, Simon, helps Vanessa in her search and starts to form a relationship with him that is more than "friends". Vanessa is scared of everything, even the water, and starts hearing Justine's voice speaking to her. As this story is great and finally about something other than vampires & werewolves, Sirens brings about a different type of Sci-Fi for the Dystopian reader. I recommend this for a summer break read and/or a long weekend trip.

Delirium by Lauren Oliver

Title: Delirium
Author: Lauren Oliver
Genre: YA, Sci-Fi/Dystopia, Fantasy, Romance
Publish Date: February 1, 2011

Summary: Ninety Five days then I'll be safe. I wonder whether the procedure will hurt. I want to get it over with. It's hard to be patient. It's hard not to be afraid while I'm still uncured, though so far the deliria hasn't touched me yet. Still, I worry. They say that in the old days, love drove people to madness. The deadliest of all deadly things: it kills you both when you have it and when you don't.
Lauren Oliver astonished readers with her stunning debut, BEFORE I FALL. In a starred review, Publishers Weekly called it "raw, emotional and, at times, beautiful. An end as brave as it is heartbreaking." her much-awaited second novel fulfills her promise as an exceptionally talented and versatile writer.

Review (from Amazon.com): Lena Haloway is content in her safe, government-managed society. She feels (mostly) relaxed about the future in which her husband and career will be decided, and looks forward to turning 18, when she’ll be cured of deliria, a.k.a. love. She tries not to think about her mother’s suicide (her last words to Lena were a forbidden “I love you”) or the supposed “Invalid” community made up of the uncured just beyond her Portland, Maine, border. There’s no real point—she believes her government knows how to best protect its people, and should do so at any cost. But 95 days before her cure, Lena meets Alex, a confident and mysterious young man who makes her heart flutter and her skin turn red-hot. As their romance blossoms, Lena begins to doubt the intentions of those in power, and fears that her world will turn gray should she submit to the procedure. In this powerful and beautifully written novel, Lauren Oliver, the bestselling author of Before I Fall, throws readers into a tightly controlled society where options don’t exist, and shows not only the lengths one will go for a chance at freedom, but also the true meaning of sacrifice.

Review (from Julie): Lena, our heroine, feels safe and is ready NOW to take the cure to keep her safe from the deliria (love). According to the book of SHHH once she is cured she will take on the life she is intended, along with a husband the government helps her in selecting. Everything seems to be moving along as desired, that is until the day she takes her test and sees a young man who helps stage a sabotage. Later on when Lean and her best friend Hana go for a run, they inadvertently meet up with a guard who looks just like the young man from that day at her test. Lena realizes this is the young man she saw and decides, after curiosity gets the best of her, to get to know him. His name is Alex and he will forever change everything she thought she knew. Will she contract the deliria or will she be cured in time?
If you are a fan of M. Night Shyamalan you may find this story line similar to "The Village" but it is definitely not the same (don't get the two confused). It also falls in line with Suzanne Collins "The Hunger Games". This is a great read and I recommend it.

Divergent by Veronica Roth

Title: Divergent
Author: Veronica Roth
Genre: YA, Sci-Fi/Dystopia, Fantasy, Romance
Publish Date: May 3, 2011

Summary: In Beatrice Prior's dystopian Chicago, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue—Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is—she can't have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.

During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles to determine who her friends really are—and where, exactly, a romance with a sometimes fascinating, sometimes infuriating boy fits into the life she's chosen. But Tris also has a secret, one she's kept hidden from everyone because she's been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers a growing conflict that threatens to unravel her seemingly perfect society, she also learns that her secret might help her save those she loves . . . or it might destroy her.

Debut author Veronica Roth bursts onto the literary scene with the first book in the Divergent series—dystopian thrillers filled with electrifying decisions, heartbreaking betrayals, stunning consequences, and unexpected romance

Review: To start out this review let me say that Divergent is a must read and you'll find yourself wanting to know what happens next and wanting more! The scene is set up in a quiet town of Chicago (Abnegation) where everyone is humble and selfless. No one looks in the mirror or feels anything. You get almost a feeling of emptiness for this faction. When reading through the book you gain the knowledge that Abnegation runs most of the council's as they feel "un-bias towards anything and have nothing to gain or lose".
Our heroine, Beatrice, goes through a tough trial and comes out on top. After taking "the test" and realizing she has a secret she can tell no one no matter what the consequence of any actions, can she let her guard down and actually learn to trust her people? Can she hold herself together and fight alongside her fellow faction members?

Beatrice changes her name to Tris and befriends her trainer, Four. She begins building a trust relationship w/ him. Tris also misses her brother dearly and yearns to be w/ him again, even at a HIGH cost. Tris soon discovers things about herself she never thought possible.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Sci-Fi/Dystopian novels.

As stated in the beginning, it is easy to read this book in a matter of days and the ending will leave you wanting MORE and wanting to know what happens!

Fallen by Lauren Kate

Title: Fallen
Author: Lauren Kate
Genre: YA, Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Romance
Publish Date: December 8, 2009

Summary: There's something achingly familiar about Daniel Grigori.
Mysterious and aloof, he captures Luce Price's attention from the moment she sees him on her first day at the Sword & Cross boarding school in sultry Savannah, Georgia. He's the one bright spot in a place where cell phones are forbidden, the other students are all screw-ups, and security cameras watch every move.
Even though Daniel wants nothing to do with Luce--and goes out of his way to make that very clear--she can't let it go. Drawn to him like a moth to a flame, she has to find out what Daniel is so desperate to keep secret . . . even if it kills her.
Dangerously exciting and darkly romantic, Fallen is a page turning thriller and the ultimate love story.

Review: I expected more from this story. Luce is sent off to a new school to start over after a fire burned/killed her boyfriend and burned off her hair. The story does not go into detail as to how this happened or why. This left me curious but moving forward. Luce shows up at this new school (followed by her shadows) and discovers it's like being in a military boarding house; no phones, security cameras everywhere, etc... Luce meets two hot young guys: Daniel and Cam. Cam wants her and is friendly towards her and Daniel acts like she's the plague, yet she wants him more (typical wanting something you can't have). When Luce realizes who Daniel is and what her past is and how they connect to each other the story finally begins. There is a war that has been taking place for centuries and they keep reliving it. Unfortunately it's basically where the story ends as well. Some of the characters in the book become angels to protect Luce and Daniel (which surprised me) and I thought back to the school again. School for screw-ups or school for fallen angels? If this peeks your interest take a gander and read it. I was not too impressed by it and do not plan to venture onto the other novels that follow.

Ethereal (Celestra Series Book 1)

Title: Ethereal (Celestra Series Book 1)
Author: Addison Moore
Genre: YA/Romance/Supernatural
Publication: Out Now

Summary: Sixteen year-old, Skyla Messenger is a dead girl walking.
When her newly remarried mother moves the family to Paragon Island, to a house that is rumored to be haunted, Skyla finds refuge in Logan Oliver, a boy who shares her unique ability to read minds.
Skyla discovers Logan holds the answers to the questions she’s been looking for, but Logan’s reluctance to give her the knowledge she desires leaves her believing Logan has a few secrets of his own.
Skyla’s bloodlines may just be connected to the most powerful angelic beings that roam the earth, and the more she knows, the more danger she seems to be in.
Suddenly an entire faction of earthbound angels wants her dead, at least she still has Logan, or does she?

Review: I had high expectations of this book but was left completely disappointed. At this point I can only hope to get that time spent reading this book back.
Skyla moves with her mom and step-dad to a new town with their now extended family. Skyla makes a new friend (who is her neighbor and this girl hooks up with her new step-brother). She meets two cousins that are super hot, Logan and Gabe Oliver, and she can't seem to stay away from either of them. Skyla discovers things about herself she did not know and discovers things about these boys she wishes she never learned.
Skyla tends to bounce between the boys; hellbent on making a decision about anything and leading anyone on that will follow her. She comes across very whiny and co-dependent and cannot be taken seriously. There's one chapter devoted to her traveling in seeing a girl, taking a neclace, bringing it back, stealing it, taking it back again and finally, returning it back (whew).
If I were to give this a star rating it wouldn't make a 1.

The Night Circus review
